Road Traffic Safety
According to the WHO (World Health Organisation) 1.2 million people die in road accidents every year and 50 million are injured. This makes lack of road safety one of the most serious threats to human life and health globally. The cost to society is estimated at a breathtaking 518 billion dollars, not counting the cost in human suffering. Ninety per cent of those killed are in the Third World, where the trend is, at an increasing pace, in the wrong direction. Sida is therefore investing in the international education programme “Road Traffic Safety”, with researchers from the University of Lund spreading Swedish road safety knowhow where it is most needed.
